  • Seeking to attract best minds in science for globally competitive research, an ambitious project by CSIR to woo NRI scientists is all set to take-off. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has approved the selection of 18 scientists for the post of 'Outstanding Scientists' as part of CSIR’s STIO project. The Scientists and Technologists of Indian Origin (STIO) scheme of CSIR had misfired badly as a US scientist of Indian origin had been dismissed within five months of being offered the position of "outstanding scientist" November last year. Samir Brahmachari is Director-General Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
  • Gurbax Malhi, Canada’s longest-serving Indo-Canadian member of parliament and the first turbaned Sikh MP in the West, has denied signing the motion on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which was tabled in the Canadian parliament.
  • Indian-American girl wins Spelling Bee in US. Anamika Veeramani spelled the medical word "stromuhr" to capture the top prize. Anamika became the third consecutive Indian-American bee champion, and the eighth in the last 12 years.
  • Cuttamanchi Venkata Subba Reddy, 35, a software engineer from Andhra Pradesh, was robbed and shot dead by a group of five people in a motel near Detroit, U.S.

  • President Pratibha Patil unveiled a bust of poet Rabindranath Tagore in the Shanghai locality, where he lived during two visits to the city in the 1920s. The unveiling took place at a brief ceremony at an intersection on the busy Maoming Road at the French Concession area of the eastern Chinese metropolis.
  • Sydney hosts world’s first canine concert.
  • International Air Transport Association Summit was held in Berlin.
  • International Whaling Commission holds its 62nd annual meeting from June 21 in Agadir, Morocco.
  • Days after announcing that he was voluntarily quitting Penguin International as its CEO, India-born David Davidar has now said the company had terminated him in the wake of a sexual harassment suit slapped against him by Ms. Rundle, a former woman colleague, who is demanding $523,000 in damages. Later Davidar & Rundle reached an out of court settlement.

  • After Supreme Court's rap on Mirchpur, Haryana government set up a one-man commission to probe caste-related violence when a Dalit man and his physically-challenged daughter were burnt alive after a group from Jat community torched their houses. The commission will inquire into the circumstances leading to death of Dalit Tara Chand and his daughter Suman. It will also find out who was responsible for loss of life, property and violence and assess the damage caused to Balmikis.
  • Mumbai to install doppler radar.

  • Manohar Malgonkar, the author, died in Jagalpet in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district. He wrote five English novels: Distant Drum (1960), Combat of Shadows (1962), The Princes (1963), A Bend in the Ganges (1964), and The Devil's Wind (1972). His works of history are Kanhoji Angrey (1959), Puars of Dewas Senior (1962), and Chhatrapatis of Kolhapur (1971).
